THAT!

This is one of Monkey’s recent favorite words.  It’s quickly becoming one of my LEAST favorites. At first, I thought it was so wonderful.  He actually understood another word I consider tough for someone his age.  Words like “more” and “that” are concepts not just words and different from names for objects like “cat” or “waffle”.   So naturally, when he first started saying it, I indulged as long as the item wasn’t dangerous for him.

Now, anything he sees that he can’t reach, he says, “THAT!” and points.  Then he’ll say, “UP!” which means he wants me to pick him up so he can either grab the item himself or ask again for me to get it.  This behavior that I’ve reinforced in the past has reeked havoc on my back which has been hurting this week.  I’ve been trying to not pick him up as much but sometimes he’s so insistent and in cases where the item is OK for him to have, I feel bad for him because he’s frustrated by his limitations.

There are two lessons for me out this new development.  Growth and learning are both great but I need to think AHEAD as to how my reactions will create unwanted behaviors.  This has always been tough for me to do, however, this lesson is easier.  The other lesson is to find ways for him to express his frustrations in ways that won’t affect my physical health for one but also a good outlet for him.

Breathing treatments, yay.

This morning DH got Monkey out of bed at 5:45 AM.  An hour later, he came upstairs and said, “Get up.  We need to take him to the hospital.”

Half drowsy, I asked, “Why?”

“He’s wheezing.”

So I got up threw some clothes on, brushed my hair and my teeth and off we went.  No one else in the waiting room, we were taken back into the Pediatric ER quickly.  First thing, the nurse sucked out a sample of Monkey’s snot for RSV testing.  The doctor listened to his breathing and he was indeed wheezing.  They gave him an oral steroid and told us that he’d be going for x-rays shortly.

When the tech came by again she led us to the x-ray room where they had painted a rocket, space-themed mural on the walls.  They asked DH to hold Monkey for the x-rays and put one of those lead jackets on DH plus a little one over Monkey’s nuts (there I’ve finally said it, “Monkey nuts” — sorry, I know I’m immature).

It was hard for Monkey to sit still for the x-rays but he and DH managed quite well.  He only had to redo the profile chest x-ray again, thank God.  On a side note, today was the first day Monkey said “stars”.

They determined from the x-rays that he didn’t have pneumonia and the RSV test came up negative but he was definitely having some issue.  They concluded that it was an asthmatic cough but that he probably didn’t actually have asthma.  Apparently this is common.  The doctor warned us though that it could be RSV and not just be positive yet so he advised us to make a follow up appointment with his pediatrician tomorrow.  They sent us home with a chamber, kinda like an inhaler for asthma.

I had a major deadline at noon today and was counting on the time this morning to complete my deliverable.  NOON.  We were discharged from the hospital at 10:00 so you do the math.  I called work to warn them and they were sympathetic but asked if there was anyway I could get at least one thing done.  Luckily, our daycare provider is lenient and since her son was already sick with a cough as well as every other kid in her care, she said I could bring Monkey by so I could my deliverable to my client.  I ended up being about 2 hours late on it.  Not too bad considering I was frazzled and could barely keep my thoughts together.

On the way to pick Monkey up this afternoon, his daycare provider called.

“Uh, you might want to take him back,” she said.

“Back?  To the ER?” I asked.

“Yeah, he’s been coughing really hard all afternoon even after his breathing treatment,” she said as I heard Monkey in the background coughing hard and crying.

She suggested I might be able to take him into his pediatrician’s office before they closed.  I called them and they said to bring him in right away.  They examined him and gave him a different kind of breathing treatment (which btw, my daycare provider asked why they didn’t put him on in the first place because that’s what she thought they would have done).

So we’ve done two breathing treatments this evening with the nebulizer, one at the doctor’s office and one at home.  Seems like the one at home has only lasted an hour and a half as I now hear Monkey coughing down the hall.  We’ll see.  Wish us luck.  Good night.

Week of Sickies, The Sequel

It just keeps going! Now Monkey has a cough. Sorry I haven’t been updating a lot or visiting many other blogs. It’s just been hectic around here lately.

American Bulldog Determination, Bengal Tiger Strength

This is one of the many things Bikram Yoga instructors say while you try to press your sweaty face against your sweaty knees simulataneously pulling your upper body down using the fingers you’ve placed under your feet.  I always find it funny but inspiring.  As I heard this mantra in a class this week, I realized maybe I should start applying it or others like it to life off of the yoga mat.

The one that I think will help me most with my toddler tantrum woes is “Mind over Matter.  It only matters, if you mind.”  Let’s see how good my recall is for that when the next time Monkey throws a fit and is grapping at my face!

Butt Ambition

So I’ve finally found a goal that will hopefully get me to workout more often.  A pair of yoga shorts.  Now, I know this sounds strange but these yoga shorts require you to have a nice butt.  Or rather, you SHOULD have a nice butt in them if you are going to wear them outside of your house.  They aren’t cheap either which is why they will be my REWARD when I get the appropriate butt size to put into them.

Here are the steps I have taken to get to this goal.  DH and I have signed up for the fitness center that our town provides (isn’t that nice?).  This fitness center is MUCH nicer than commercial ones which surprised me (I guess my town tax is going to good use — although you still have to pay a membership as well).  Plus, it has an indoor pool that’s not too busy so I won’t feel like a dork swimming it in — I’m not that strong a swimmer.

Because this fitness center has a nice child care center (the one at the local gym … well, I just wasn’t comfortable with it), I will be able to drop Monkey off for 30-60 minutes to go onto the elliptical machines, lift weights, do a group fitness class or swim!  And this means, that for motivation reasons, DH and I can go together.  I figure if I can do one of the aforementioned activities for 2-3 times a week for at least 30 minutes, I will be at the very least more fit and not out of breath when carrying Monkey up a flight of stairs.

The second part of this plan is to continue going to yoga — at least once a week, ideally twice.  This is the expensive part of the plan unfortunately.  However, for me, the time spent on the elliptical machine or weight lifting, etc. is all to make going to yoga more enjoyable.  It seems yoga is the only thing I can really get excited about (when I’m in shape that is).

So this is the plan for a new butt and hopefully some new yoga shorts to put it in!  Wish me luck!
