The closet stays closed but kitty can get in and out. You can also babyproof the door to prevent your child from being able to open it.

We had to move our litter boxes to a place that the cat could get to more easily but still be gated off from the toddler. We are on scenario #2 of my list of things to try. Dare I say that so far it seems to be working?
